SOE should be happy in the beginning of 2012, because after DC Universe Online's success, their old MMORPG EverQuest 2 sees "amazing growth" after turning to free-to-play. The company's president John Smedley just revealed some statistics on Twitter, and he said "40 per cent increase in daily logins since going F2P. 300 per cent increase in new players. And 200 per cent increase in item sales. Plus we have added a lot of new subs."
Back in August 2010, SOE release a free-to-play EQ2 known as EverQuest II Extended. At that time, EQ2 Extended existed as a separated service to the original EQ2. In December 2011, EQ2 Extended and EQ2 finally merged into the same server and became free-to-play. Now players with free account can choose from 8 classes and experience the gameplay content to level 90.
The third EverQuest game which is codenamed EverQuest Next is now under development inside SOE. Very little about the game is known, but the game is likely to release on PS3 and PC.
